Drowning in the fear of death,
Deafened by the screams of pain,
I slowly fall.
Mesmerised by the sight of gas I freeze,
“Gas! Gas!” the officer yells,
I don’t hesitate.
Staring into the eyes of death I shiver,
My mind is taken away to the deep thoughts of my family.
Horses trample over those immobilised by the gas,
“Everyone up!” The officer yells,
No mercy for anyone injured.
I open my fear-filled eyes to the sight of hell,
“Why me?” I Whimper, “Why me?”
The deadly silence almost kills me with its evil touch.
I am a prisoner of my own body,
I lie with no hope,
I roll over only to be given a chilling welcome by the sight of my brother coughing, stuck in the killer sea.
“Attack!” the officer yells,
I stare into the eyes of gloom,
I see a full brigade of German soldiers marching towards us.
They go through the bodies and shoot those who survived the hell,
With every blink of my eye 10 men die.
I look into the sky hoping for a miracle,
The response I got was nothing,
The only thing I got was a chilling reminder.
DEATH!
