Life and Death in the War

we waited in the deafening silence,
waiting for the whistle to blow.
we wait anxiously, drenched in rain and covered in mud,
disease has already taken three of my best friends.
after what feels like an eternity the whistle blows.

we charge over the top of the trenches
sprinting into gunfire,
sprinting into living hell.
silence falls onto the battlefield,
BANG…
a man falls to his knees
BANG!
another man falls
one after the other,
men are falling left and right.

Everything is silent once more,
I stare across the blood-soaked battlefield,
at the fallen men at the friends I lost on that very day.
