I watched from the trenches hidden away,
Millions of soldiers died that day,
Men fought to stay alive,
Their families prayed they would survive,
Barbed wire everywhere,
Dust and sulphur fill the air.
“Over the top” I heard them shout,
I felt I was trapped there was no way out,
Bang, bang the enemy was firing their guns,
I shot, slashed and stabbed at the Huns,
Carrier pigeons fly through the sky,
While tired ponies drag the supplies.
In smoke as thick as London fog,
We struggled through the muddy bog,
My clothes all ripped where the barbed wire bit,
The blood welled thick where the bullets had hit,
My short happy life flashed through my head,
Would my family cope if they heard I was dead?
Through no man’s land I had to crawl,
Caught in the mud I felt so small,
In the end there was no way out,
A wasted life without a doubt,
Now all that’s left is a poppy field,
Remember me my fate is sealed.
