World War 1

As my feet sank into the mud
The earth began to shake
Black smoke filled the air
The trees began to break

As the bullets were being fired
And my heart began to pound
The echoes of the gunfire
Blocked out every other sound

Men were dropping all around me
Their cries for help going unheard
The bird above flying free
Why couldn’t my comrade’s cries be heard?

What reasons can be so important
That all my comrades must suffer such horror
Why must war be necessary?
Can’t we sort out the problems so we can live to see another tomorrow?
