This Great War

I stand here on the softened soil
Remembering a time long ago.
When men took and lost lives in the name of war
To protect and survive
Transport me back in time so that I can relive that time again
To see the bloodshed and the pain, but know the camaraderie once again
Oh this Great War!

The poppies grow here where I stand amongst this bloodied desolate land
Where soldiers fell and horses died and something in human will did subside.
To feel the pain and anguish again
Oh this Great War!

I know as I stand here now amidst the poppies growing wild
The human sacrifices that were made on both sides of the battlefield
Was it worth it? Who can tell!
This Great War was a living hell. For soldiers and their families at home
The pain and suffering all alone
Oh this Great War!
