Always Remember

I sprint over puddles and bodies and mud,
I’d go home now if only I could,
Deafening bombs explode left and right,
All I can do is stay alive and fight,
I fall to the ground, my leg beyond repair,
And I know many families will be mourning in despair,
For the bodies around me that drop like flies,
And I hope I won’t be one that dies,
I hoist myself up, rifle in hand,
And run for my life across no-mans-land,
I dive for the trench, I’ve made it at least,
The remains of our men appear too from the East,
A sudden yell screams, ‘Gas! Gas! Gas! ,
Now my time had come too at last,
So the lives that were lost, please remember,
In the war that ended on the eleventh of November…
