Life as the wife of a soldier

As I lie awake at night with warmth and protection,
I know you’re out there somewhere.
Fighting for our freedom, with your life on the line,
Guilt and worry overrun my mind,
I want you home safe and sound.

As I indulge in luxuries that are all around me,
More guilt overwhelms me.
I know you’re out there in those treacherous conditions,
With not even a bed, just overrun by mud and lice,
While bombs drop and explode above and beside you.

I pray and hope you return shortly and safely.
I long for the day I hear your voice again,
With a knock on the door
And a beaming smile to be seen once more.

I hope you know I love you dearly,
And miss you terribly.
Please be safe until we meet sometime again
Whether it’s in a week, a month or year,
I’ll still be here at the door awaiting your return,
But I guess this is the life, as a wife of a soldier.
