My Letter Home

I thought I’d write these lines for you,
To say I’m with friends, fighting on,
I’m being strong and brave in countries new
And you can tell proud tales of your noble son.

Enlist they say! Come together! Defend your country,
Kitchener cries “Destroy this mad brute!”
Stand up! Sign up! Join the infantry
Line up and aim your gun, then shoot.

A hell on Earth, I’d never known,
Such horrors, such death, mental strain,
Far from those English green fields I had once sown,
I long for death to end this agony and pain.

I’m sorry my words don’t bring any cheer,
I look forward to the end of the war
You will never know the struggle here
I don’t know what we’re fighting for.
