Patriotic Poem

As they walk off into the foggy distance,
Hearts sink and tears fall,
Mothers mourn and father’s forgive,
It’s all for the mother – who is proud of her children,
Everyone comes together
Knowing sons, brothers, dads and friends
may not be returning.

Weeks later – letters mound and minds wander,
Worrying becomes a constant thought,
Soldiers carry on and so do families,
Missing you r dearest is reality,
They may not be returning.

Leave is soon,
And they come home,
Holding your precious in your arms,
Missing, mourning and worrying is a distant memory,
Until the time comes again,
Goodbyes,
And you know they won’t be returning.

Out there away from home,
A letter a month,
Fighting everyday,
Bombs, rubble, gas and guns become your life,
Knowing that you may not be returning.

Then the telegram,
Devastation sets in,
Anger gushes through your body,
Sadness is your personality,
Fear of more war, more death,
A part of you is gone.
And now the mother, cries for help,
Because her children are slowly learning,
And everyone knows now, they won’t be returning …
