Somewhere in a Trench…

Somewhere in a trench,
Somewhere in the world,
A soldier sits…
If he listens very hard,
He can hear his children laughing,
If he searches through the smoke and dust,
He can see his wife in the garden,
If he breathes beyond the acrid stench,
He can smell mown grass and fresh summer air,
If he reaches out away from the mud and debris,
He can feel the warmth from the fire in the hearth,
If he rejects the acknowledgement of his salt soaked lips,
He can taste bread and Sunday dinner,
If he refuses to believe in hell,
He can think its heaven on earth.
