The soldier who had no hope

The silence was defining
all of us sat waiting for the signal.
Soon all the life would flow out of me like a wild river.
Climbing over into no man’s land my hands trembling.
I tried to imagine I was holding a hot cup of tea and I could not spill it. My life depended on it.
Then suddenly my legs went from beneath me.
The ground swallowed me up and fed me to the devil below. The sick German soldier that killed me!
