Trench Horrors

Its victims being infected by mud and disease,
Staring into no man’s land, scanning the horizon,
Waiting for the slightest movement,
Not giving their location away.

Men and boys running into the deserted expanse,
Disappearing in the cloud of exploding shells,
Dropping and descending into the heavy mud,
Without a chance to explain his experiences.

The midnight darkness closes in, making the suffering blind,
Still soldiers keeping watch, the unknown men trying to sleep,
The candle glitters in the moonlight, illuminating their stained faces,
Then a light breeze whistles through the bodies,
The light remains and then,
Nothing…
