Trench Life

When I first stepped into the muddy mess,
I wanted to be here less and less,
Men all around me crawling with lice,
The smell really was just not nice.
Lieutenants shouting,
Men doubting,
That they would ever live through this.

Bodies all around me,
And insects I could see,
Nothing was a pretty sight,
But all a fright,
During this terrible fight.

We were all freezing cold,
Until we were told,
To be ready to fight,
On this awful night,
Gun in hand,
And I headed for no man’s land….
