Who will remember?

Who will remember the soldier?
He who dug pits in the soil,
Through the carcasses of brothers he once had,
To place the monster of brothers he never will?

Who will remember the soldier?
He who went seeking for glory,
For honour to his name and ladies to his lap,
But found only worms and maggots instead?

Who will remember the soldier?
He who was forced from home, only nineteen,
Fought for his country, tried but died,
Who mother never held his hand again?

Who will remember the soldier?
He who cannot stand the war anymore,
Worth less than a mule, lives like a rat,
Who will find a way to escape, there is no glory.

Who will remember the soldier?
His name; his deeds; not his death,
Remember who he was to his family and friends,
Not what he was to the war and sergeants.

Who will remember him?
