FIRST DESIGN: Work begins on the front of The Northern Echo’s forthcoming historic Remembrance Sunday edition

ON Remembrance Sunday, The Northern Echo will publish a special edition of the paper to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

It will feature news of how communities across our region are marking the centenary, and it will tell stories from the Great War.

One of the highlights will be a series of reproduction front pages from The Northern Echo which chart the history of the war between 1914 and 1918.

Plus there will be the finalists in our Schools Poetry competition.

Ten per cent of the paper’s £1 cover price and advertising revenues will be donated to the charity Help for Heroes which assists today’s wounded soldiers.

It will be the first time the Echo has published on a Sunday since a special edition 17 years ago reported on the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. However, from September 1914, throughout the course of the First World War, the Echo published every Sunday so that, in the days before 24-hour rolling television news, local people were kept up-to-date with what was happening at the front.

Editor Peter Barron said: “We wanted to do something special to mark the centenary of the extraordinary sacrifices made by ordinary people. This will be a unique edition, and we hope it will be something people will want to keep.”

Practically every family lost a relative during the war, and the Sunday edition offers people the chance to honour the sacrifices of a previous generation with a special In Memoriam notice. You can place the notice, complete with picture if you wish, by calling 01325-381444 or by going online at northernecho.co.uk/remember and clicking on “Remembrance Day” in the “In Memoriam” section. A notice starts from as little as £10.

The paper will be available on Sunday, November 9, from all newsagents and supermarkets. If you are one of our many readers who has the paper delivered through your door six-days-a-week, you will need to contact your newsagent in advance to request a copy.

In fact, to avoid missing out, it would be a good idea to order your copy today – they are sure to be snapped up on Remembrance Sunday.
